UAE Corporate Tax Registration — Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The Federal Tax Authority has made Corporate Tax registration mandatory for all businesses operating in the UAE, regardless of whether the business expects to have a tax liability. This includes mainland companies, freezone entities, and branches of foreign companies. Failure to register by the applicable deadline results in penalties.
The standard UAE Corporate Tax rate is 9% on taxable income exceeding AED 375,000. Taxable income up to AED 375,000 is subject to a 0% rate. Qualifying freezone entities may benefit from a 0% rate on qualifying income, subject to conditions. Multinationals within scope of the OECD global minimum tax rules face a 15% effective rate under a top-up mechanism.
The first tax period depends on when the business was incorporated and its accounting year-end. Returns are filed nine months after the end of the relevant tax period. We determine the applicable filing deadline for your specific entity and ensure the return is prepared and submitted on time.
UAE Corporate Tax law requires businesses to maintain financial records and supporting documents for a minimum of seven years. This includes invoices, contracts, bank statements, and audited financial statements where applicable. Records must be sufficient to verify taxable income, allowable deductions, and any elections made — such as small business relief or qualifying freezone status.
Most legitimate business expenses incurred in generating taxable income are deductible, including staff salaries, rent, operating costs, and depreciation. However, certain items are specifically disallowed — including fines and penalties, 50% of entertainment expenses, and payments to related parties that do not reflect arm's length pricing. Transfer pricing documentation requirements apply to transactions between related parties.
