Motivations vary, but common reasons include securing long-term optionality for children's education and future employment rights in the EU, accessing European healthcare, diversifying geographical risk, enabling freedom of movement across the Schengen Area and EU member states, and maintaining a connection to European roots or ancestry. European residency and UAE residency complement each other well for globally mobile families.
In most EU member states, minor children of a resident or citizen derive residency rights from their parent's status. Where a parent obtains citizenship, children below a certain age (which varies by country) may be eligible for citizenship simultaneously or shortly after. The Schengen Area is a zone comprising 27 European countries that have abolished passport controls at their mutual borders, allowing free movement for residents and citizens. A residency permit from a Schengen member state allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen Area without visa requirements. EU citizenship provides the full right to live, work, and settle in any EU member state.
Residency-by-investment programmes typically have minimum physical presence requirements that are lower than standard naturalisation routes — in some cases as low as seven days per year. Standard residency permits require sufficient presence to maintain status. EU citizenship, once obtained through a programme that leads to naturalisation, provides lifetime status without mandatory residence requirements. European residency does not automatically trigger tax obligations in the European country — it depends on whether you also become tax resident there, which is typically determined by days spent in that country and the existence of a permanent home. Becoming tax resident in a high-tax EU country alongside UAE residency has significant implications.
